Company / Business / Position: Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW – CEO
Background in Cycling? I am a casual rider most of the year, becoming a bit serious from June to August. I got the bug when Tony Abbott’s Polly Pedal decided to support Ronald McDonald House Charities in 2004 and I was invited to join them for the 110km Sydney leg from Westmead to Mittagong. I bought what I thought was an expensive 2nd hand road bike for $500 and was amazed at how good it was to ride something that was made for it! I couldn’t believe that I could have ridden that far in one day but I did and that started my passion for riding.
How did you get involved with Ride for Sick Kids? I was involved in the initial concept of the ride in 2005, converting it from a walk from Tamworth to Newcastle to a Ride from Inverell to Newcastle. With my recent sojourn into riding, I thought we could cover more distance in less time and see more people and that training would be easier than walking. We had a need to raise funds for a major extension at the Newcastle Ronald McDonald House and also a hope to build a second House in Tamworth. It worked and 10 rides later we have raised well over $2million!!
What keeps you coming back year after year? I love that we ride through the towns that people live in that use our Ronald McDonald Houses, Family Rooms, Retreats and Learning Program. The camaraderie of the team of riders and support crew is something that you don’t experience anywhere else. The money that we raise is significant and makes a huge difference to our programs and what we can do for children and their families. It forces me to stay fit through winter! I love it.
Your Motto? Where you are right now is where you are supposed to be so make the most of it! Enjoy your family today!
